This bronze pen tray was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) and manufactured by Tiffany Studios, New York (between 1900-1933). Tiffany produced 24 different desk-set designs with a typical set containing an inkwell, pen tray, paper rack, rocker blotter, and blotter ends. Some patterns contained more than 80 different pieces. They weren’t mass-produced and were sold separately so a buyer could pick and choose what they needed.
This tray is in the Abalone pattern which is a stylized grape, vine, and leaf motif on a linear circle & square ornate Art Nouveau background. The inset abalone discs represent grapes.
The pen tray has three compartments with the center featuring an abalone medallion. The compartment dividers have slight grooves to hold pens. The tray has rounded corners and four flattened ball feet. The top finish is a darkened gold, the sides and bottom are in a smooth gold finish. Factory stamped 'TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 1159'
In very good condition with intact original abalone discs. It has some darkened patina in areas and slight signs of wear to finish inside outer compartments and at the pen rest edges.
