This vintage bronze plate was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) and manufactured by Tiffany Studios, New York (between 1900-1933). Tiffany produced 24 different desk-set designs with a typical set containing an inkwell, pen tray, paper rack, rocker blotter, and blotter ends. Some patterns contained more than 80 different pieces. They weren’t mass-produced and were sold separately so a buyer could pick and choose what they needed.
This plate is in the Abalone pattern which is a stylized grape, vine, and leaf motif on a linear circle & square ornate Art Nouveau background. The inset abalone discs represent grapes.
The plate has a raised border with 8 abalone insets designed into a scrolling motif. The finish is gold doré, in which the bronze surface is acid-etched for texture and then plated with gold for a soft, burnished look. Factory stamped TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 1670. An etched artisan mark reads “WWW” or “MMM” (to the top right of the stamp)
In very good condition with intact original abalone discs. It has a few spots of a darker patina.
Size: 7-3/4” diameter
