This bronze pen wipe was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) and manufactured by Tiffany Studios, New York (between 1900-1933). Tiffany produced 24 different desk-set designs with a typical set containing an inkwell, pen tray, paper rack, rocker blotter, and blotter ends. Some patterns contained more than 80 different pieces. They weren’t mass-produced and were sold separately so a buyer could pick and choose what they needed.
This pen wipe is in the Zodiac pattern which represents the twelve astrological signs of the Zodiac. The pattern typically features an astrological symbol surrounded by an intertwining woven organic pattern. Pen wipes were used for catching excess ink from early nib pens. The brush is removable and would have been replaced with heavy use.
The pen wipe is octagonal with four astrological symbols on four sides: Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, and Capricorn. The finish is gold doré, in which the bronze surface is acid-etched for texture and then plated with gold for a soft, burnished look. Factory stamped TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 1085. Additional etched mark reads ‘1907’.
In good condition with spots/areas of dark patina.
Size: 3 x 3 x 2-1/4” tall (2-3/4” with the brush)
