These blotter ends were designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) and manufactured by Tiffany Studios, New York (between 1900-1933). Tiffany produced 24 different desk-set designs with a typical set containing an inkwell, pen tray, paper rack, rocker blotter, and blotter ends. Some patterns contained more than 80 different pieces. They weren’t mass-produced and were sold separately so a buyer could pick and choose what they needed.
These blotter ends are in the Zodiac pattern which represents the twelve astrological signs of the Zodiac. It typically features an astrological symbol surrounded by an intertwining woven organic pattern. A desk blotter was used to protect desks from ink stains and blotter ends were placed on each side to hold the paper, leather, etc. in place.
The blotter ends are rectangular with four astrological signs on each: Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius, Pisces, Sagittarius, Taurus, Leo, and Virgo. The finish is gold doré, in which the bronze surface is acid-etched for texture and then plated with gold for a soft, burnished look.
