This bronze inkwell was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) and manufactured by Tiffany Studios, New York (between 1900-1933). Tiffany produced 24 different desk-set designs with a typical set containing an inkwell, pen tray, paper rack, rocker blotter, and blotter ends. Some patterns contained more than 80 different pieces. They weren’t mass-produced and were sold separately so a buyer could pick and choose what they needed.
This inkwell is in the Zodiac pattern which represents the twelve astrological signs of the Zodiac. The pattern typically features an astrological symbol surrounded by an intertwining woven organic pattern.
The inkwell hinged lid features the Cancer sign, interspersed with a few stars. The octagonal box has an intertwining woven pattern around the top and on four sides. The finish is gold doré, in which the bronze surface is acid-etched for texture and then plated with gold for a soft, burnished look. The clear glass insert is intact with some chipping at the top edge. Factory stamped TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 842.
In good condition with spots of dark patina and a few red marks on the bottom.
