This bronze letter rack was designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933) and manufactured by Tiffany Studios, New York (between 1900-1933). Tiffany produced 24 different desk-set designs with a typical set containing an inkwell, pen tray, paper rack, rocker blotter, and blotter ends. Some patterns contained more than 80 different pieces. They weren’t mass-produced and were sold separately so a buyer could pick and choose what they needed.
This letter rack is in the Venetian pattern which simulates elaborate tooled leather designs used by Venetian craftsmen in the sixteenth century. A band of deeply carved ermines is featured on each piece. The Renaissance period often featured ermine in artwork as a symbol of purity.
The letter rack has two open slots for letters and/or paperwork. The ornate pattern is identical on both the front and back. A band of ermines runs along the base. The finish is Dull Gold, one of three different gold finishes used in Venetian. Factory stamped TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 1643
