A vintage Johnson Brothers set of 6 dinner plates, 6 salad (or dessert plates), and 2 mugs. This 1960-1970s set is the Chelsea Collection Kings Road pattern of bright red poppy flowers. Designed and made by Johnson Brothers, a British tableware manufacturer, and exporter founded in 1883.
The beautiful illustrated flowers, leaves, and stems are in a retro 70s style which is somewhat reminiscent of the organic Art Nouveau period. The plate background is a very pale blue-green with brown specks throughout. The edge is rimmed with a gunmetal band. The set is Ironstone china, a type of vitreous pottery first made in the United Kingdom in the early 19th century.
In very good condition with very minor light scratch marks on the surface, and some light crazing. One 6” plate has a hairline crack visible from the front. One 10-1/2” plate has a small chip visible from the back.
